즐겁고 행복한 생각만 했고
아침공기도 활짝 개어서 싱그럽기만 했어요
솔숲 사이 강물을 오르내리는 젊은 애인이 있었거든요
나무들이 이른 움을 트고 새들이 노래하기 시작한
어느 봄날에 찰리는 연인 메리와 결혼을 했습니다
하지만 초가을에 메리에게 말하죠
포도주가 익을 때쯤이면 솔숲 사이 강에서 돌아올 거라고
그가 치명적인 급류에 휩쓸린 것은
황량한 위스콘신의 어느 이른 아침이었습니다
소리없는 강물이 잔물결짓고 삼목이 흔들리면
바람소리 내던 아래쪽 어느 암석 해안에서
사람들은 그의 시체를 발견했지요
지금도 모든 뗏목들이 그 폭포를 내려가고 있어요
사람들이 차를 몰고 오가는 그 길목에는
외로운 무덤이 하나 있답니다
어느 활짝 갠 맑은 아침 날
그 무덤에 사람들은 야생화를 심었어요
그 무덤은 젊은 두 연인들을 위한것이에요
